Santiniketan city was founded by Devendra Nath Tagore, the father of Rabindra Nath Tagore, who was a follower of Brahm Samaj and bought a large land in a place called Bhubandanga in 1863, which he named Santiniketan, but it is called Bolpur in official records. He set up a school on the land and started teaching students the principles of the Brahm Samaj as well as the importance of nature and simplicity. In 1978 Rabindranath visited first time here when he was 17 years old. In 1901 Rabindranath Tagore started Ashram for boys for the study of Indian culture and traditions. on March 6, 1915, Mahatma Gandhi met Rabindranath Tagore for the first time here. In 1921 Rabindranath Tagore founded Visva-Bharati, which became a Central University in 1951, Visva-Bharati University, later expanded to include a wide range of disciplines, including Arts, Sciences, and Humanities. It has now become an Institution of National importance and one of India's Prestigious Universities. Tagore also established several other cultural institutions here, including Kala Bhavan and Sangeet Bhavan. Santiniketan became a hub of cultural and intellectual activity, attracting scholars and artists from around the world. It is known for its peaceful, tranquil atmosphere and rich history. It has been included in the list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites in 2023. India Post, West Bengal Circle has released a PPC depicting an Artistic Drawing image of Singha Sadan, featuring the Rooftop Bell & Clock Tower is one of the most well-known landmarks of Santiniketan. It was constructed under the supervision of artist cum architect Surendranath Kar in 1927.
