AIRAVATESVARA TEMPLE
DARASURAM S.O.
Pin Code: 612 702
Date of Issue: 09.10.2024
The Airavatesvara Temple in Darasuram, near Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, is a stunning example of Chola dynasty architecture, built by Rajaraja Chola II in the 12th century CE. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple showcases intricate Dravidian architectural elements, with its 85-foot-high temple tower and mandapam shaped like a chariot pulled by horses, symbolizing grandeur and movement. Named after the myth of Airavata, Lord Indra's white elephant, the temple's main deity, Airavateswara, is a fusion of Lord Shiva and Airavata. The temple is renowned for its detailed carvings, including 108 Bharatanatyam dance postures (Sodasa Upasara) and scenes like Shiva and Parvati in a lotus on the mandapam ceiling. Remarkable carvings also depict scenes of childbirth and the famous sculpture of Ravana lifting Mount Kailash, showcasing the artisans' expertise. The temple is also home to statues of various deities, including Buddha, Bhikshatana, Saraswati, Ardhanarishvara, Brahma, and Surya. At the entrance stand two grand gatekeepers, Shankhanidhi and Padmanidhi, representing youthful energy. One of the temple's most unique features is its musical stone steps, which produce seven musical notes when tapped. Protected by metal grills today, these steps continue to intrigue visitors. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, along with other Chola temples, the Airavatesvara Temple remains a revered pilgrimage site and a testimony to the architectural and cultural brilliance of the Chola period.
