тЪУя╕П It is a 3 masted BARQUE built at Goa Shipyard, Vasco da Gama with a sparred length of 54 metres. *A barque* is a type of sailing vessel with 3 or more masts. *INS* stands for Indian Navy Ship.
тЪУя╕П It was commissioned in 1997 as *THE FIRST SAIL TRAINING SHIP for Indian Navy,* as it is the best method of instilling the *'sea-sense'.* No. of trainees: 30; No. of permanent crew: 54.
тЪУя╕П In 2003тАУ04, she became the *FIRST INDIAN NAVAL SHIP TO CIRCUMNAVIGATE THE GLOBE -* covering 33,000 nautical miles (61,000 km), visiting 36 ports in 18 countries with her *voyage theme of* ```тАШBuilding bridges of friendship across the seasтАЩ.```
ЁЯСЖ *The ship was given a 21 gun salute* and was received by the president, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who in his speech said _тАШFor the inmates of INS Tarangini the sea is the classroom and the elements of nature are their teachers'._
тЪУя╕П *The first time that an Indian ship had ever participated in races* was when Tarangini sailed in American Sail Training AssociationтАЩs 2003 Great Lakes series. _She stood first in her division, winning ASTA award for International Friendship and Understanding,_ voted for by the captains and crews of other competing vessels *as the ship which did most to promote international goodwill and cultural understanding* during the series of races.
_ЁЯСЖShe also won the Long Distance Award,_ for the vessel that travelled furthest to participate.
тЪУя╕П The ship also *undertook THE CHOLA EXPEDITION* organized by Maritime History Society of India to retrace the path followed by Chola Empire seafarers in 2008. The ship called at the ports of Jakarta, Singapore and Phuket during the expedition.
тЪУя╕П During the 21 years, Tarangini *participated in 15+ expeditions* sailing 220,000 nautical miles (407,440 km), remaining at sea for 2,100 days, visiting 74 ports in 39 countries!
тЪУя╕П TARANGINI is name *from Hindi word 'Tarang',* meaning waves.
тЪУя╕П In 2012, *INS SUDARSHINI,* built to the same design, was commissioned by Indian Navy.
