Welthy Fisher was the American founder of World Education and World Literacy Canada for literacy programs linked with social and economic development.
Her friend Mohandas Gandhi requested her in 1947 to begin LITERACY HOUSE outside Lucknow for literacy training linked with agricultural and industrial development, as it was a key strategy to eradicate poverty . In 1953, she founded Literacy House at Allahabad and literacy house in Lucknow at age of 73.
Fisher was honored by India, as it based its village literacy programs on her ideas. She was the first recipient of the Nehru Literacy Award.
